Our dreamy Irish wedding (part 1)

I don’t believe in marriage.

No, I really don’t. Let me be clear about that. I think at worst it’s a hostile political act, a way for small-minded men to keep women in the house and out of the way, wrapped up in the guise of tradition and conservative religious nonsense. At best, it’s a happy delusion – these two people who truly love each other and have no idea how truly miserable they’re about to make each other. But, but, when two people know that, and they decide with eyes wide open to face each other and get married anyway, then I don’t think it’s conservative or delusional. I think it’s radical and courageous and very romantic.

OUR ENGAGEMENT + WHY WE CHOSE IRELAND + THE COURTHOUSE WEDDING + PART 2

Big, big, BIG thanks to Kaitlin at A and Bé Bridal Shop who, in the midst of a meltdown at the 11th hour (read: a week and a half before we left for Ireland), made last minute wedding dress-magic happen with Sarah Seven, the designer of my offbeat ensemble.

ashlae, i love the quote you shared. i kind of feel similarly about marriage. i didn’t think i’d ever get married because of all the stupid shit associated with marriage/marriages/married people. and then we made our own sense of it. it’s so striking and awesome to see that quote – that sentiment – juxtaposed with wedding photos. love.

AHHH!!! So beautiful! Wish I had thought of Ireland as a wedding location! Everyone looks splendid and I can see the joy radiating from your face, Ashlae! HUGE Congrats! And despite what anybody may have told you (and what they most certainly told me!), the first year of marriage is magical and fun, not crazy & difficult.

Ashlae, thanks so much for sharing your wedding photos. It looks so full of dreams and magic! (And I especially love the Tina Modotti quote). I found your blog right after your engagement post and fell in love with the way you tell a story. Your vegan desserts are a happy reason to keep coming back for sure, but I love being able to see your love story with Thom continue to play out since that first post I read. Thank you and ohmygosh so many congratulations to you and Thom!!! This is seriously one of the most deliberate, radical, & romantic weddings I’ve heard of.

    Have a sweet day,
    Ashley-Marie

P.S. Looking forward to pt 2 & the wedding cake recipe ;-)

Oh WOW it must be incredible to have your moments captured so beautifully, I mean really, it’s like the most incredible shoot, it’s insanely beautiful how on earth did you make that all happen while handling your wedding I don’t know!

I totally agree about marriage, if you recognise what it is historically and go for it it’s very special. It is what you make it. I thought it wouldn’t feel any different, my partner and I were together for 14 years before getting married nearly 2 months ago now, but it does feel so special, a layer between us and the world. And also a seriousness, my responsibility to be better, to do the right thing by him in all that complexity it entails, it is such a landmark in life gives you a chance to assess such things I think. And then also a chance for family and friends to wish you well, which meant so much to us.

Congrats and all the best with your adventures through life together x

As someone who just got married and still feels weird about going through with something so “normal,” that quote really sticks. Also, the photo of you in the bathtub is so fucking gorgeous I can barely handle it. All the best to you and Thom!!
